ON ONE thing Joan de Venecia is at odds with her uncle -- she’s no fan of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. De Venecia, who topped the 2005 bar examinations, is against Arroyo’s decision to place the country under a state of national emergency in February.

"Proclamation 1017 was wrong,” said the 25-year-old niece of House Speaker Jose de Venecia, one of Arroyo’s staunchest allies. “And I don’t like Arroyo.”

“I am independent, but I respect my uncle,” said the young De Venecia, stressing that the Speaker is “very supportive of me.”

Her father, Antonio De Venecia, is a former judge in Dagupan City and older brother of the House Speaker.

Joan, who topped the 1,526 successful bar examinees in 2005 with a grade of 87.2 percent, graduated cum laude from the College of Law of the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

The self-confessed “jolog” (down to earth person) is nursing a broken heart.

A few days before the bar exams result came out, Joan split up with her boyfriend.

Now working at the Sycip, Gorres, Salazar & Velayo Law Office, she plans to look for her “Mr. Perfect.”

There’s something else Joan hopes to pursue -- to join a non-government organization someday.

I just read a bio of Joan de Venecia. It says that Joan "has been known to express opinions that are at odds with what her family supports."
