California Assembly Member Jackie Goldberg Asks Philippine Government to Release Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran

Los Angeles – Assembly member Jackie Goldberg of the 45th District of California signed today March 10, 2006 the Statement of Concern initiated by the Alliance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines (AJLPP) and signed by a growing number of different labor, church, community and human rights leaders in the United States.

The statement condemns the declaration of a state of emergency in the Philippines by Gloria Arroyo. The statement also demands the immediate and unconditional release of Anakpawis (Toiling Masses) Representative Crispin Beltran who remains incarcerated in Camp Crame after being arrested when the state of emergency was declared in the Philippines.

Assembly member Jackie Goldberg was a well-known student activist in the University of California in Berkeley and later a very staunch community advocate. She has been supportive of the Filipino American community which comprises a significant constituency of her district – the North Hollywood, District 13 in Los Angeles and her state assembly district – the 45thDistrict in California. #
